SALSA PICANTE

Darrin and I received a fabulous Christmas gift- a Bosch! With that said we have been using it the last few days. Darrin got ingredients to make super hot salsa-there was like 15 crazy looking peppers that I have never even seen. Just to paint you a picture of the upcoming scene-our kitchen and living area are in the same vicinity, there are no walls dividing the two areas. Darrin was making his salsa and I went to the kitchen to make some dinner and about 10 seconds later I started having a horrible coughing attack (not from a sudden onslaught of the flue) the peppers from being cooked on the stove made the air super thick and made for "spicy air" I don't know how to describe it. I couldn't breathe. My shirt was up over my face to cover my nose and mouth for most of the night. Darrin even had to bring up our huge fan to start airing out our place. He was even having coughing attacks. This has never happened before, I can not believe he could even eat the salsa that we couldn't even breathe in. He is insane! The air was so thick from the peppers cooking that it hurt to breathe. I can't believe any person can eat salsa that almost kills you to make!!

Splish, Splash....

Grandma thought of the best thing in the world, I figured not to bathe Colby and be lazy so my mom would offer to bathe him everyday for me. She gave him a bath in the sink! I thought it was crazy, I have never done that, he is always in the bath tub for his baths. He fell in love with the sink. He sits up so he can splash around and it is the perfect size for him. This way it is way more secure so he does not fall over. He loved him bath time. Thanks Grandma!!! Also, ever since Colby was born he has been a morning boy. Darrin and I are not but he loves waking up early. I have taught him to stay asleep until 7 but I would love just one more hour, not happening. But I really can't complain he is a great kid, if that is his only downside I can handle that. The best is Grandpa is a morning person so every morning I would walk upstairs like a zombie and grandpa could play with him in the morning. They had great fun, he loves his grandparents!

P.S. He can hold his own bottle! That is the best news ever. I have so much freedom! Also he had his six month checkup and he is 99% in his height and his noggin and 87% in his weight! He is so adorable, just like his daddy!!

Thanksgiving Fun

We were able to spend Thanksgiving with my family. I love Thanksgiving, it is nice being with family and playing games, eating tons of yummy food and of course carying on the fam tradition of Thanksgiving bowling. Every time I go to Boise I have to go to my favorite food joints. The first is Mrs. Powells cinnamon rolls. NO ONE makes them as good. Someday I want to work there just so I can learn the recipe. The dough is so light and airy- delicious! Second, Westside Drive In, a great chef decided to ditch the 4 or 5 star restaurant he owned and opened a gourmet drive through. I always get a #7- gardenburger combo. Seriously, everything on that menu is divine. My thrid fav is Idaho Pizza Co. - my dad found this place. I remember going there with him all the time when I worked with him at Peterson's. There salad bar is amazing and they have great pizza. The flavoring is awesome. Food, food, food! If anyone is heading to Boise you will have to try these out!

P.S. Some of my hair must have fallen out during my pregnancy because now I have these annoying baby hairs that are growing in. Did that happen to any one else?

Cute New Shoes

I never put shoes on Colby, I think because I don't like shoes- it must mean he won't either. :) But... I found these for 3 bucks so I decided to start letting him wear shoes. Here he is diggin' his new tennies.

Scariest Moment Ever!!!!!!!!!

We were standing on our ward's main corner, holding signs, letting all the cars now where we stand and reminding them to vote Yes on Prop 8. Normally the Yes crowd has 3 corners and a couple No voters stand on a different corner- tonight we stood at the same corner. Everything was going normal, people are either happy and give a thumbs up, honking like crazy for us or they give a different finger and drive by saying mean things. No big deal, we are used to this. Darrin decides to go stand on another corner with others waving signs while I stayed on the main corner with Colby. On the main corner there is about 20 Yes sign holders and about 8 No sign holders. The Yes sign holders are spread out on all sides of the corner and the No sign holders are in the middle. Yes, it is uncomfortable to be a few feet away from someone who has a different view but everyone is as respectful as they can be.

About an hour into this, a guy shows up late 20's and starts swearing up a storm. He is using the f bomb in so many ways I didn't know what to think of him. He comes up and starts to shove some of the Yes signs out of peoples hands and rips others up. Next, he goes to the No's and starts cussing them out and while doing that he shoves one of the No sign holders so hard that this kid falls backwards on to his back. We are standing on concrete, it looked like it really hurt. Now everyone is dumbfounded are starting to get really scared. All of the guys are trying to tell this guy to calm down, while doing this he shoves one of the Yes guys into the street where cars were driving. Luckily no cars hit him, they all slammed on their breaks. The guy who shoved him looked like he was going to kick him and than a whole bunch of guys were grabbing at this guy and trying to hold him back. Luckily no one was hurt! Everyone was so confused by this guy; he didn't even have a specific side he was upset with. After this happened we were waiting on the police to get down here and figure all of this out while the guys were watching this guy so he doesn't get away. While all eyes were on this guy Darrin ran over and saw the drunk guy's friend back in the background with a switchblade, and kept flashing it like deciding if he was going to use it. Darrin seemed to be the only person who saw the knife so he kept an eye on him until the police showed up. The police took a while to show up so when they got there the cops went for the drunk guy first. Darrin saw the guy with the knife start walking away so he grabbed one of the officers and they ran after him. Once they caught up to him he threw the guy on the ground and started to cuff him. It turns out that the guy must have hid the knife somewhere so the cops could not find it. The cops then took the two guys away and we eventually went home. It turned out to be one of the scariest things ever. Crazy! Even though this was the craziest thing I have ever witnessed I'm thankful that it didn't get so out of hand that someone got hurt. I am glad everyone was okay! All I can say is ONE more day!

Man Bonding....

Colby has the best seat in the house!

Update on Prop 8

Here is an article we received on Monday written by Frank Schubert. He is the Campaign Manager for Yes on 8.

"Gay activists held a fundraiser on Tuesday night at billionaire liberal Ron Burkle's mansion in Beverly Hills where they raised an astonishing $3.9 million. Even as guests were being entertained by Barbra Streisand, Melissa Etheridge and Mary J. Blige, No on 8 operatives were busy launching a sneak attack on the institution of marriage. They began dumping $3 million into television commercials this week alone. That is on top of the nearly $4 million in air time they already had purchased for this week, meaning they are spending an unbelievable $7 million on air time this week alone!

In the middle of the night last night, they began airing a new commercial featuring liberal Democrat Jack O'Connell, the California Superintendent of Public Instruction, designed to trick voters into thinking that gay marriage won't be taught in California public schools. The No on 8 campaign realizes that this is their Achilles heel, and they are going to say and do whatever
they need to in order to confuse and trick voters.

O'Connell slyly but shamelessly misrepresents the law, saying that California does not "require" that anything about marriage be taught in public schools. What he doesn't say is that his own Department of Education reports that 96% of schools DO TEACH the courses that include marriage. The Supreme Court's legalization of gay marriage unquestionably means that young children will be exposed to gay marriage in school, just as they are in Massachusetts."

After receiving this email we realized that our campaign needed more help. Thanks to a great family and awesome friends -WE DID IT! Our Campaign was able to exceed their goal of much needed donations. The money is being used to pay for commercials this week. Thanks everyone for making this possible!!!

Vote YES on Prop 8

One week until the upcoming 2008 election. The biggest concern for us Californians is Prop 8. Voting YES on Prop 8 restores and protects a traditional marriage between a man and a woman. I have been making calls telling others to go out and vote. Today Darrin and I stood on a major street corner in Rancho holding signs and letting our fellow city folks know where we stand. We have both never felt more out of our comfort zone but we know we are doing the right thing. Some people on the opposing side have been behaving pretty poorly which makes this even harder to stand up for. I know as a mother I will move out of California before someone teaches that being gay is okay to my child. This is not an environment I want Colby or any child in. I do not need teachers telling children that this is appropriate. We are asking for everyone's help, you can donate money at www.ProtectMarriage.com or call friends and family who live in California to please vote Yes on Prop 8.

Colby's first Halloween!

After many debates on the costume that us "Stage Parents" were going to parade our 5 month old child as for Halloween this year, (Baseball Player, Charlie Brown, Sumo Wrestler, Etc.) we came across this little beauty at Downtown Disney. We have yet to teach him how to throw "Hang Loose" signs and talk like a red eyed surfer type with the munchies, but we thought that this was pretty cool anyways.

Stressed? My work has ways of dealing with that.

Many people don't know that glass is extremely strong on the face but fragile on the sides. Most of the glass that we use at D&R is 1/2" thick ( Residential glass is typically 1/8"). 1/2" glass is so strong that you can throw a rock at the face and it will most likely bounce off and only leave a mark. But as you can see in the video, the slightest tap on the corner and the glass (tempered) explodes. This is a 100 SQFT piece of glass that costs thousands of dollars, it was rejected from an Apple job because of a few scratches (left by other people).

Candice and Kayles Wedding

Candice got hitched! My sister was married to Kayle in the Boise temple. Colby and I were able to fly to there a few days early. We had a blast partying the entire week. I also got to eat at my 2 favorite joints Idaho Pizza Co. and Westside Drive-In. Yummmmmmy! Colby finally met his Miller cousins for the first time. There is 4 now, I don't think the Miller side will come close to the Craner clan. :) Benson is only two months older than Colby- they look the same age and are both soooo handsome. Back to the week-here is some of the fun stuff I was able to do with the fam. Candice flew in super late Tuesday night. We surprised her with a Cocoa candlelight party. We had the table decorated all fancy and used my moms good china. Also a good family friend had a bridal shower for her where she got lots of good stuff. On Friday we were able to get manicures and pedicures with the entire bridal party. We all had a great time and I was able to meet Kayles fam which I instantly fell in love with. Candice will fit in just fine. With the last one hitched I can now say the Millers landed with great in laws and are all very lucky for that.
Saturday was the big day. My grandpa traveled from Rexburg to perform the ceremony. Now he has sealed all four Miller children which has been a great experience. After the ceremony I was able to catch up with the fam at the luncheon which was great. I feel so out of the loop down here. One of my favorite parts about the week- Darrin and I got to decorate the hotel room. Hahaha.(evil laughter) Hopefully they forgive us. :) There was definitely some surprises. (giggle) All in all we had a great time. Darrin was the DJ at the reception and did an awesome job. Most importantly Candice looked gorgeous for her wedding! The newlyweds are doing great!!!!!

Here is a cute picture of Darrin rocking Colby to sleep. If you notice what Colby's wearing it says "Star Wars" across the butt. Like father like son!

First Attempt

Colby has always been a great sleeper, by the end of his first month Colby was sleeping through the night. His sleep schedule is anywhere from 7-7 or 8-7am. After four months of this he has now started waking up during the night. Since having him I am now the worlds lightest sleeper, I wake up to everything. The slightest sound Colby makes and I am wide awake listening, waiting, and if nothing happens I than go back to sleep. When Colby wakes up he does not cry he fusses. When this happens I put his Binky back in his mouth and he falls back asleep. Sometimes I do this a couple times in a row because he is wide awake and thinks that this is a game. He always has a huge grin, like he knows it's the middle of the night. Lately this has been happening four or five times a night. This has been continuing for weeks now. I am ready for a change and to drop this habit.
Plan B.
I have heard a lot of mothers trying this and certain family members give it great reviews. The fast explanation-The plan is to let your kid cry so they learn to calm themselves down so they do not always rely on a parent to do the calming. They need to learn to fall back asleep by themselves.
Last night was my first attempt. Colby fell asleep at 7. To make this night easier on me I turned his monitor all the way down, this way I would not hear him unless he was really crying not just playing in his bed. I'm sure he woke up during the night but if he did I did not hear him and he must have fallen back asleep without my help. So far so good. Wow, could Colby really be that great of a kid to not cry once during the first attempt? At six I awoke to a strong set of lungs. He was crying/screaming hysterically. Colby continues to cry and at 6:35 I call Darrin who is now at work to ask what I should do. We decide to give him his Binky. I did that and since than he has been asleep and it is now 7:50.
I am now thinking if I should have done anything differently. I DO NOT want him waking up earlier than seven. I am not a morning person and seven is very early for me. I would love if he slept until 8. Any advice?

Blogging away...

Colby often decides to lay by me while I play on the computer. He must have been tired. Look at how he fell asleep, it's the strangest position, okay I mean cutest!!!

What did I get myself into......

I have decided to get myself super involved with church. Since I have no family down here there is a need to get out of my comfort zone and make some new friends (We don't want Kathryn and Bryan to get sick of us). In my new ward I've started going to playgroup every Thursday which has been great meeting lots of fun young moms.
Now it's time to expand. Sunday I signed up for everything possible. First, enrichment night. We are making a Thanksgiving feast probably so us young moms will know what to do. I am excited and this might prove helpful in case it's just Darrin and I this year. Also I signed up to feed the missionaries, which also is a first. Now that we have Colby I want to feed the missionaries as much as possible. When Colby decides to go on a mission my hope is he will get fed meals often. Positive thinking!
The next sign up sheet was for Halloween. So, I signed up for desert. After church I told Darrin about the desert when he informed me that he signed us up for the a Chili cook off that just happened to be for the same meal. He wants to make it super spicy, he thinks that is what will win the cook off. I informed him that he must be able to eat a whole bowl with out gulping down Mountain Dew.
That is when I realized I might have taken on way to much. But no, Silly me, I signed up to call 10 pages of residents and ask how they are voting on Prop 8. This has now moved way out of my comfort zone. Tonight was the first night of calling. My first page and a half all were voting No to Prop 8. I have no idea how other people's call lists are going but my results made me so sad and mad at everyone who is voting NO. Pray for me that I will be able to talk some sense into these people.
So in the end, I think that I may have bitten off more than I can chew. I hope that everything turns out okay. Pray for me!

Our Place

Hollywood Bowl

John Williams? Does that ring a bell? Well, if it doesn't don't feel bad, I had know idea who he was until Darrin told me. Seriously though, he is brilliant and truly a legend. Corny but I believe it after witnessing this concert. He is getting older in age and he seems like the sweetest talented old man who is also very humble. I am glad we decided to attend the concert.
First, the Hollywood Bowl is an outdoor amphitheater, nestled in the Hollywood hills. There is a park right outside where lots of people come to have a little picnic before the concert. We, of course, learned the hard way since we did not eat before hand and the food there was so expensive. (Coke makes a great dinner) Other than the food price, this was a great experience and plan on attending many more. Plus you can get very inexpensive tickets ($10) for some great performers.
Mr. Williams wrote the scores for movies like Star Wars, Superman, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, E.T., Close Encounters of the third kind, The Olympic Theme, and Hook. (just to name a few). He also performed some songs that night from classic movies like Singing In The Rain, Sabrina and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
It was an Amazing Evening.

Happy Birthday Darrin

The big 26. I remember him saying he has always wanted to be a young father. I hope 26 still qualifies him. We have been married three years now and hope to have a million more to come. Darrin always amazes me. He is always so sweet and thoughtful and teaches me how to be a better person. I love how quick he is to share and how willing he is to help others. I must thank his friends and family. Darrin had a lot of great examples growing up and I can see that everyday. He knows what is important in life. One of my favorite things about him is how spontaneous and fun he is, I love that! I always want to spend every minute with him.

Lots of Love
Clarissa and Colby

Ants, Ants and more Ants

I hate ants and any type of creature that can crawl around. Insects scare the crap out of me. If you don't believe me ask anyone who has lived with me. I scream bloody murder when I see them. Totally freaked about bugs! Well, let me tell you I have never thought of ants to bother me- normally I only see them outside. Now they are in my home and must be added to my Creepy Crawly Creature Hate List. Rancho is infested with ants. The church has them, a couple of weeks ago I left right after sacrament because they were crawling up my leg! Shiver!!! Now they have come to my apartment. They have messed with the wrong person. I'm so petrified of the creatures that when I am finally brave enough to kill one- I kill with loads of anger. Lately I walk around my house with Ant Raid. Every time I see one I spray them like a crazy lady who has gone mad. It's like I am carrying around mace to protect myself from harm. Except I am scared of little ants instead of some intruder. Luckily the ants are not in the kitchen, at least yet. Which I find very odd but of all places they are in my bedroom. Hello- that is supposed to be my sanctuary. I am now scared of my bedroom. : ( I must kill them all. I can't wait till Colby is older. I will buy him a magnifying glass and tell him to start helping me kill the ants!!

G & G Miller, and The Angel's Game

This weekend we moved out of the pool house, ( which we will miss-that place was awesome) and into our own apartment. Wow! We have not had one of those for 2 1/2 years. I am very excited to have our own place. The down side, I am horrible with change and reality struck- I am now officially home by self with the baby. Before I always had company when Darrin was away. His parents, the Scott's but now it's just me. I will need to think of things to keep me busy until I get used to this. I could unpack everything but I do not want to at all.
When we moved into our new ward we asked if they could help us move, which is the first time we have ever asked the church for help. Darrin said 14 people raised their hand to help us move so we were hoping on five. Darrin got started moving the heavy stuff with the help of Richard and Bryan so it was my job to go to the church and bring the help to the storage unit. I got there and not one person was there. I did not know what to think. My dad was with me, I was embarrassed- here we thought we had an awesome ward and not one person comes to show up. I call Darrin to tell him the bad news and that I would wait 15 more minutes and then take off. As we were about to leave my Dad decided to see if there was a phone number on a church door for the bishop so we could see if we could get some help. As he was doing this he saw a huge group of cars and people just waiting on the other side of the church building. ( I know what you are thinking, I drove by that side but the parking lot tucks away so I missed seeing all of the cars) Including us we had 11 people help us. Such a relieve!
My parents came down and helped us move from Glendora to our apartment in Rancho Cucamonga. Which was a huge help. Colby loves having extra attention. After a lot of hard work trying to get organized Saturday night we went to our first Major League baseball game at the Angel Stadium. We had a blast, we were able to see some great plays.

Regret- Oops!

Everyone knows Colby was born May 16th. I was some what nauseated but I can not make any excuses. I should have been working out during my pregnancy. Wait, let me go back I should have been working out since I got married but have not been. I gained 40 pounds with my darling boy and am having the hardest time getting these extra pounds off. So, for all of those mothers out there, I need some workout and eating advise. Any good recipes, wait let me rephrase. Healthy recipes, that taste good? In dire need of advise!

Hansome baby boy

From the rate that Colby is growing I seem to forget that he is still so young. I keep forgetting that he needs so many naps and that he sleeps so much. Babies sleep so much. I am shocked by that. I keep thinking each day he gets older he will not take one of his naps or they will go down considerably in time, like maybe only sleep 5 minutes instead of 2 or 3 hours. I am wrong.

Not quite ready.... still cute

Colby is trying out Bynna's bouncer, he can only hold his head up for a little while, it's still to much work for the little guy. Maybe in a month we will try it again.

Mann's Chinese Theatre

The weather was super hot and it was pretty crowded but we had a fun time last Saturday. We took pictures with the stars and I also enjoyed showing Darrin Rodeo Drive. I must say I have no idea how some people have as much money as they do. Darrin and I did not even want to go into any of the shops because of how ritzy they all were. Still, it was fun to walk around.

Daddy and Colby

Colby already loves to watch Dad play Halo. He is having himself a good time.

Perfect Fit

Our sink is the perfect tub for our little guy. He fits perfectly in it. I have never realized how slippery a baby is when they are all wet. I find it a lot harder to wash him than I thought it would be.

Clarissa's List

1. I am the most sensitive person you will ever encounter. Could be good or bad.
2. My eye color will sometimes differ. One eye is more blue and the other more green.
3. Sometimes I am excited to take a break away from Colby but the minute I leave him, I am so sad without him. I miss him instantly.
4. I have never had long hair, the minute it gets to my shoulders I get antsy and chop it all off.
5. I actually LOVE to sing but I am so scared to sing in front of others, Darrin still hasn't heard me sing. To scared to let others know what I sound like.
6. I am a terrible runner, I'm trying to get off the baby weight and I feel like I am going to die before I get to 1/2 a mile.

Water, Water and Water

We had a great 4th of July. Darrin and Bryan smoked some amazing pork in the "Green Egg" which is a great smoker. Highly recommended. We played in the pool and had some fun pool games going- volleyball was my favorite. We decided against going to a different city to see fireworks and instead relaxed with the Scott fam for the day. We had a blast. Our little one had a new experiance- HOT TUBBING! He loved it and was so comfortable in Dad's arms. Speaking of Colby, he loves California. He has already made a friend. This is Colby andBrynna having fun in the bathtub!

Perks from the little guy

Smiles! As niece Alison would say "All babies do is eat, sleep and poop". Now we are adding smiling. Colby has started to smile. We just think it is adorable.

Silverwood Lake

Colby loving his first boating adventure at Lake Silverwood. He did so well. He loved the motion of the boat that would put him right to sleep. Here in Cali you need a reservation to get on the lake or you will wait in line for hours until others boaters are done. Also- Cali boaters are crazy! They do not understand that you are supposed to stay away from others. We even saw some guy backing up his two jet skiis, he slams on his breaks and both of his jet skis fall into each other and hit the pavement. That is the craziest thing I have seen.

Photo Shoot

I try to stay busy during the day while Darrin is at work. I figure in a couple of years Colby will not like me to take his picture so I must get them in now. For Fathers Day Darrin received a frame with some of the photos from the shoot- here they are. My men in my life are SO CUTE!

Our Beach Day!

On Saturday we went to the beach. It was My (Darrin) first time ever to the California coast. It was awesome. I tried surfing again and got my butt handed to me by the enormous waves. Clarissa wasn't feling good enough to try surfing but there was plenty to do there besides going into the water. We walked the Huntington Pier and watched a live Christian rock band show. There were tons of little restaurants and surf shops. We had a blast and Colby was awesome!

One week til the big move

From coming home to the hospital, we had 5 days in Utah until we moved to California. Now understanding how different life is with a new baby, away from family and after a super hard delivery... we should never have moved that soon after. I am glad my mom could stay with us those 5 days until we left to California. It was so nice to have her take care of myself and Colby. Aunt Candice came out and helped take care of us also, such a nice sister. It was hard to leave Candice, always being so close to her, it was hard.

The delivery was so bad that a week later I was still on a high dosage of pain killers and always carrying around my "doughnut" to sit on. Darrin took a picture of us at the hotel on our trip down to California. Looking back I don't know how we survived. I do know that God gave me a great baby. Colby is the easiest going baby, he never cries and is a very happy baby. Exactly what I needed to make it through.
Looking back, I had post partum blues and was having a hard time with the move. One major change in life is huge but this was 2 right in a row. I am so lucky I found some great friends quickly. I know I was looked after in California and will never forget that.
